UNESCO studying Arbaeen pilgrimage for registration

Karbala Study and Research Center continues to have the Arbaeen Pilgrimage to Imam Husayn (as) registered in the UNESCO as the largest annual peaceful cultural event of Muslims from all over the world.

Hawzah News Agency (Karbala, Iraq) - The center stated that they submitted a request of registration supported by authentic documents and pictures, proving the peacefulness of the pilgrimage, to the UNESCO, and they received a preliminary approval.

 

The Arbaeen walk is such an important event in the Iraqi Islamic heritage, and the center, therefore, has been trying to have it officially registered as an international peaceful event where Millions of Muslims gather, and have its origin established.

 

Arbaeen is a Shia Muslim religious observance that occurs forty days after the Day of Ashura. It commemorates the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali (as), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (sawa), who was martyred on the 10th day of the month of Muharram.

 

Arbaeen is one of the largest pilgrimage gatherings on Earth, in which up to 25 million people go to the city of Karbala in Iraq.
